Week 9: Earthquakes and Volcanos

 Week 9: Earthquakes and Volcanos

1. What did you do in lab today? In lab we made predictions on where earthquakes and volcanos happen on Earth. We then used a website to investigate where earthquakes and volcanos happen. I was able to notice some patterns where many earthquakes and volcanos happen they were on the edge of plate boundaries. A question I asked was why is there a volcano in Hawaii that erupts often in the middle of a plate boundary?

2. What was the big question? The big question for this weeks lab was what are the patterns where earthquakes and volcanos are. We used a website to explore this question within our groups.

3. What did you learn in Thursdays lecture? In lecture I learned that Hawaii is a hot spot. The hot spot releases lava and then the tectonic plates shift creating the different islands of Hawaii. This is unique to specifically the Hawaiian Islands.

Textbook:

1. What did you learn? I learned that there are two different types of waves to determine whether an earthquake has occurred. P-waves have the ability to travel through any type of material. S-waves have the ability to ONLY travel through solid materials. Scientists measure these waves to determine the starting point of an earthquake plus the magnitude released.

2. What was the most helpful? I found the video on the formation of the Hawaiian Islands very interesting and helpful. As the pacific plate shifts west new islands in the chain were formed and are still being revealed. The youngest island is the Big Island of Hawaii and it is where the current hot spot is under.

3. What did you need more information on? The three ways volcanos can be formed are sort of confusing. I know there is convergent plates, divergent plates, and hot spots, but how deeply do we need to understand them?

1. What questions, comments, and/or concerns do you have? I feel that I didn't grasp an understanding of volcanos and earthquakes as a student in primary school. It is interesting to actually understand what is going on below the crust as I hear about these things happening around the world. Something I would like to learn more about is tsunamis. I was on the coast of Oregon this past summer while there was a tsunami watch from an earthquake in Russia.
